If you prefer a specific hotel and don't want to deal with any unexpected surprises, you can book a hotel through Tingo.com where if the price of your room type drops after your booking, the price difference will automatically get refunded back to your credit card.
If traveling without an itinerary and on a whim is more your style, see if you can book super-cheap and last-minute vacancies through mobile apps like Blink or doing it the old-fashioned way by calling the hotel front desk and negotiating for a discounted rate.
